Great fuel stop south east Ga. is KLHW
Great service nice peolpe descent price. Joint military/civilan airport south of KSAV. Couple of easily avoided restricted areas to the north. Call KSAV approach for help arounfd them. Coutesy car available , couple of chain restaurants in town that aren't too bad.

John,

I second Rocket @ PVW. As you discovered when you stopped there they are best known for Bellancas. In fact the predecessor Miller Flying Service was a one time owner of the Viking factory in MN. They are one of three Viking specialists in the country and have been for 50 years. Been there a lot since I have had many Vikings...and of course quite a few Comanches, too.

Just paid $6.20 a gallon at KANP... still a bargain compared to what they wanted at KIAG, Niagara Falls International. The FBO said they had "low" fuel prices there because they had to be competitive! They are not the most expensive in the Us by any means, but competitive... wow... I didn't buy any fuel as the minimum uplift to wave the ramp fee was 30 gallons.. and I wasn't going to tanker fuel for almost 7 dollars as gallon.
Oh by the way if you have a twin don't land at KIAG, just to park on the ramp fr a few minutes is 7 dollars ramp fee. 3 dollars landing fee and 40 dollar handling fee? The 47 dollars goes to th FBO the 3 dollars to the airport authority.
They wave the 40 dollars for singles. I told them the Twinco was a single with 2 small engines instead of 1 big one.
Didn't work.... Oh well, out of principle I will avoid that airport even if I have to use 100 dollars of fuel to get to a friendlier place...

Trinidad, Colorado: on the CO-NM border south of Colorado Springs. Have stopped there a couple of times, always a very good fuel price but the real charm of the place is: Walking Right Into 1955! The FBO is in the old terminal building complete with the (no longer working) soda fountain that nobody has ever bothered to remove. The FBO office is in the old FSS room with all the ancient radio gear still intact. Last time we were there (about a year ago) a couple of local good old boys who manned the FSS in the late '50's were there having a visit with the airport manager. So much for our planned quick fuel stop! Nothing much ever happens at Trinidad airport and there is talk of it going unattended, self-serve only. If you are looking for a great trip to Lower Nostalgica hurry up and go there before they lock the place up forever.

Cortez, CO: a great place to base yourself for a holiday in the Four Corners area. Close to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep and other attractions. Fuel price is fair (one will always find better prices) and the FBO folks are extraordinarily friendly. We're told they have a very good maintenance facility. Budget and Hertz rentals in the adjacent (tiny) terminal. It's a small place so it's a good idea to reserve your car ahead of time just in case..... Cortez is a pleasant town with good, reasonable priced accommodations and some good restaurants. We flew in there there last month planning to stay for a couple of days and departed a week later.

Don,

Thanks for sharing these. Our fuel normally takes us past these from our part of TX but they sound like they are worth a stop just because.

In winter if you are skiing at Telluride and can't get into the airport there Cortez weather is more reliable and you can take the back (and only) auto road into Telluride.

My new favorite in Central Florida is Airport Manatee just south of Tampa. The FBO owner also owns the airport and he is a great guy.

Gas is $4.50 a gallon.

Its a grass strip but well maintained. Doesn't get any better than that in Florida. If it does let me know!

Just came back from a two week flying vacation. Stay away from any airport in the Witchita area. Especially McPherson, KMPR, what a dump. Facilities all closed on the weekend and gas was 6.60 a gallon self serve. If traveling cross country across the lower 48 Oaklahoma offers much better fuel prices.

1V6 Freemont County, Canon City, CO. Just west of Pueblo. About as far west you can go before going over the mountains. Short drive to Monarch and Crested Butte. Very friendly, hanger available for reasonable prices unlike most airports close to skiing.

KANW Ainsworth, NE. About in the center of the US. Nothing there just a self serve pump. Good for a quick turn.

KBFF, Scottsbluff, NE . Nice restraunt on field. Friendly, courtesy car many close restraunts and close to Chimney Rock SP. nice views.

T67, Hick Field, Fort Worth. 100LL 4.99 ; nice restraunt on the field. " The Beacon". Enterprise from Meacham will bring a car over and take you back.

KFTW, Fort Worth Meacham. Sandpiper Aviation very friendly, no tie down fees, Enterprise office next to FBO, nice pilot shop.

KSEP, Stephenville, TX. Just SW of Fort Worth. Take the golf cart to Hard Eight BBQ, just a block from the airport.
