PA-30 Annual Inspection Supplies (consumables)

PA-30 Annual Inspection Supplies (consumables)

Postby David Pfeffer » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:28 pm

Hey gang,
Can anyone add to my list of consumables required for annual? Just bought a PA-30 and am about to annual it. I've gone through the Maintenance Manual, but could use a sanity check before getting started:

(2) BA-10 Induction Air Filters
(1) D9-18-1 Central Gyro Air Filter
(2) B3-5-1 Regulator filters
(1) Instrument Air filter?? **the maint. manual lists another instrument air filter with no part number. Not sure what it could be.
(2) Cases Engine Oil
(2) Engine Oil filters **anyone have the oil filter number handy for the I/O 320 (non-turbo'd)? -110?
(2) Landing Gear Bungies **anyone know the best (cheapest) place to buy? Has Aircraft Spruce ever stocked them?

LPS-2 (on hand)
Aeroshell-5/6 (on hand)
MIL-5606 (on hand)
Distilled Water (on hand)

Thank you!!

LPS-1 and LPS-3.
Aeroshell #7 -- Piper calls for this mil spec. lube for most of the landing gear.
AN900-16 copper crash gaskets (oil suction screen)
Lots of AN507-832R8 screws. I forget the MS number.
Oil filters, likely - 48110's or equivalent.
Dow DC-4 compound for lubing the seal on the oil filter. (Don't use engine oil).
Lubriplate 630AA
Electric screwdriver (Piper loved screws back when they designed the Comanche)
Bogert Bungee tool.

Spruce sells bungees. They are cheap, at about $35-40 for the pair.

Hmmm.. Why not use eng oil to lube the oil filter gasket?

Because at a certain temperature it becomes like glue. Now I admit that most all of my problems with 'glued' on oil filters were on turbocharged engines, however, the problem went away when we followed Champions recommendation and used DC-4 compound. Sometimes it pays to read the instructions. One tube lasts forever. The joy of the hex end on the filter snapping off when trying to remove the filter is something to be missed.

I also normally have the 50 hour AD done at the same time and even though they can be re-used, I like to replace the fuel gaskets around the sump area.

Ditto Kristin's oil filter lube comment. While I'm not strong enough to break off the hex nut, I know the twin's filters to come off more easily now.

Let me add to her humor - a friend had a flat tire on his Plymouth in our driveway. He couldn't get the lug nuts off. He tried and tried and then one broke free because he'd broken the bolt. Hmm, he says so he moves on to another. Yep, breaks that bolt too. Then, it dawns on him. His Dad had owned a service station and the lug nuts on the Plymouth turned one way on one side and the opposite way on the other side.

And where is the Lubriplate 630AA used? Must have missed that on first glance through the lube chart

Do you have the p/n to the fuel gaskets handy? And/or location to buy?

OK then, will be using that on my car oil filters... lol.. they are the ones that give me fits trying to get them off..skinning knuckes and
cursing the tight spaces. Never had a problem with the Twinkies oil filters, mind you the torque to take them off is most likely more than the install torque.
As far as reading instructions, I do, and it says use dow number 4 lubricant or if unavailable use clean engine oil... which I use.. because sofar so good with using eng oil.. till now..
But Murphy says that I better get some special lube otherwise I will have a seized filter next change..

Webco has fresh bungees and fuel gaskets. You do not need part numbers, just tell them what you want. Jeff

David,

Since I rely on others to do the work, I don't have the part numbers. When there is something hard to find, I use the Tech Tab from the Home Page on this website to get to the parts manual and eventually the part number. This will get you to the menu http://www.comancheflyer.com/NS/index_serv_manuals.php

This is a common gasket I guess because no one seems to have trouble getting them. For your area, you might google the part number as someone closer than Webco may carry them.

I concur with the Webco recommendation for bungee cords. They go through a lot of them so you get fresh stock and here in OK we get'em delivered the next day. IIRC they were even cheaper than S&P last annual. Ray B

I don't have the part number but I would also suggest the copper crush washers for the spark plugs.
