Sky tec starters

Anybody have an opinion on the Sky tec LS & NL starters for the PA 30

I bought the skytec inline for my 260, I would not go back. Its great.

Hi James,

Welcome to the ICS Forum.

We went to Sky-Tec in 2003-ish for the same reason you are changing. PA39-10 is very happy with them.
The NL I think is the newest model and includes an on board spare shear pin - haven't had to use it but its there.

They advertise in the Flyer and donated a starter to last year's convention - which ironically, we won and just sold our older Sky-Tec to another twin owner on this forum.

I've been flying with Sky-Tecs for about 300 hours. They work great. Other owners have noted that they make hot starts much easier. One note, if you still have the original aluminum cables you should consider going to the Bogert copper cables. My Sky-Tecs came with a warning that high torque starters perform best with the copper cables.

I had a Skytec on the IO540... on the twinco, I had a starter die enroute home from FL at Smyrta, TN. The maintenance shop strongly lobbied me to not install a Skytec... all but refused to install one... their favorite was the B&C.... so I went with it. Both the Skytec on the IO540 and the B&C have performed flawlessly. The IA in TN... claimed that Skytec had a bad "batch" and he had seen several low time failures.

I, too, like SkyTec. The difference I note is that it does not have the initial crank of the old Bendix, but when you get past the first compression stroke it turns the prop faster. I suspect that cold weather might affect the SkyTec more than the Bendix.
