Trouble in landin gear

Trouble in landin gear

Postby Pierre Hulin » Wed Dec 23, 2009 1:58 pm

Hi

Just after take off, when I retract the landing gear, I can see the white light indicating the landing gear is in transit, after some seconds the gear motor breaker pops before the landing gear is fully retracted into the wheel wells.

At the workshop, I note coil of solenoid gear motor has broken.
After change this solenoid, I install the aircraft on jacks and connect an external power unit then I switch the landing gear selector to up. One more time, landing gear begins to retract and suddenly the gear motor breaker pops before the landing gear is fully retracted into the wheel wells. At this moment, the wheels are nearly into the wells.
After undocking push-pull cables on the arm gear retraction, I manually raise and descent the gear. I notice neither rough running point nor abnormal stress on a gear retraction tube and lever or on push-pull cables.
Technical control shows all gear switches were properly adjust and work fine.
The landing gear motor is new.
I have looked on Piper troubles shooting manual but no help has been found.

Does anyone has an idea and help me ?

Thank you and merry Christmas for everyone.

Pierre,
I would verify that the brake on the transmission was operating properly (it is the plunger looking assembly between the motor and the jack screw, and should retract anytime power is applied to the system). I would also get a known good 30 amp breaker and try replacing the one in the aircraft. If you have a C model, which it sounds like you do, the nose gear door retraction mechanism may be hanging up on the nose strut. It needs to slide along the strut, so any new rubber/residual 5606 will cause it to hang up and pop the breaker.

If none of this helps, disconnect your push pull cables from the gear and move by hand. If they are easy to move, good, hard to move/cant move, replace them.

If none of this is definitive, look at the transmission itself. If it grinds under load, it may be jamming. Also if the thrust bearing is shot or loose, it may bind under load. With the transmission disconnected from the gear, grab the jack screw and push and pull to determine this. Excessive end play is cause for further investigation.
