Landing gear up cycle pops the gear motor circuit breaker.

Postby Jack Hamilton » Sun Dec 13, 2009 8:18 pm

anyone know why the landing gear being raised would pop the gear motor circuit breaker. We dropped checked the airplane and cycled the gear 14 times without it happening. Then on the second take-0ff it happened again. After letting the breaker cool off the gear lowers normally.
If this has happened to anyone please let me know the fix. If anyone has knowledge of how to troubleshoot this problem let me know please.

Popped breaker

Postby Dale Vandever » Mon Dec 14, 2009 12:48 am

The gear motor draws more amperage when raising the gear than when lowering the gear.

The gear motor draws more amperage when airborne than when on jacks due to the air loads.

If the gear switches are out of adjustment you may be running the motor for few seconds after the gear is fully retracted, resulting in a popped breaker.

I had this problem once and it was caused by the strut height being too low. Once airborne, the struts did not fully extend and the brake lines interfered with the retraction process. My mechanic duplicated the problem on the first retraction on jacks.
