Ground Power Units

Ground Power Units

Postby Steve Smith » Thu Jul 12, 2012 5:10 am

My neighbor has a Red Baron GPU with a Piper plug. I would like to use it to practice my Garmin techniques while sitting in the hangar. Has anyone used one of these with their Comanche? Any advice? Does the master need to be on or off? I certainly don't want to damage anything.

If I remember corretly Zach warned against this at the CPPP class I attened a year or so ago. The external plug does not feed through the battery and is for use only to start the engine if the battery is dead or low. In any case check with someone knowedgable before proceeding as you may cause yourself some headachs. Ray B

Don't know which Garmin unit you have, but some of them have simulator applications that allow you to practice operations using you PC or an IPad, etc. Before we installed our GTN750, I practiced using the simulator downloaded from the Garmin website and installed on my PC. When the real unit was installed, I had already climbed most of the way up the learning curve and the transition was almost effortless.

Check the Garmin site. There may be a simulator available that matches your GPS.
