Strut cleaning/lubrication after flight

Postby bishopw » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:01 pm

My mechanic recommends wiping the exposed part of the strut with a very light oil (he likes WD-40) after putting the plane in the hanger to remove grit that lands on the strut during taxiing. He is of the opinion that this will greatly increase the longevity of the o-rings. Is WD-40 too light? Will it leach into the strut oil and cause problems? I've been doing this pretty regularly for the last year...

Struts

Wiping the struts down to remove dirt is always a good way to extend the life of the wiper and the o rings.

Most people use hydraulic fluid to wipe the strut as that is the fluid that is inside the strut and you don't have to worry about compatibility.
