I just went through this. Since I've owned my plane, the vacuum gage has never been above 4.3 to 4.5 inches. Even after adjusting the regulator to max. This summer I had the shop put in a new gage. During the ground check, the vacuum was so high that it broke the needle off the gage.

The high vacuum probably tanked a new [exchanged, overhauled] DG that was put in 18 months ago. Cost another $380 to overhaul it again.

My point, make sure it not a vacuum gage problem.

DG Drift linked to Vacuum?

Postby C-FPUA » Sat Sep 20, 2008 4:25 pm

Thanks for the thoughts!

Would vacuum issues be the most likely cause of greater than usual DG drift? The DG worked fine for the longest time, but then started drifting more recently.

All advice gratefully received!

It could be, but if you had good stable heading for a while and now not so much, I bet you have a worn out DG.

I know everyone has and swears by their instrument shop but if you are inclined to ship your DG somewhere you may as well give Paul a call. He is the neatest guy from back in the day working for Sperry, Boeing, and all the Mfg. He is real reasonable too.

Thanks for all of the help!

Another quick question: Does anyone know how to adjust the vacuum on a Champ CH215CC? Can't find anything on the internet for this one, although I found great diagrams for the RAPCO 215CC.

Again, all thoughts much appreciated!
