Gear Down Indicator light not coming on

Gear Down Indicator light not coming on

Postby Palma Heming » Mon Nov 14, 2016 4:10 pm

Looking for a few ideas on where to start ...

1960 PA24-250
went to go flying yesterday and didn't get very far in the checklist, the green gear down indicator light did not come on
- power good, breakers in
- swapped bulbs
- it was daylight, but still cycled the nav and instrument dimmer switch on off
- looked underneath to see that the 3 gear limit switches appeared to have been compressed and the wiring to those switches appear to be ok

I haven't checked voltages or traced out any wiring, but that is the next step. Just want to do a bit more troubleshooting and wisdom from the list before turning it over to my AME.

Here's hoping its just 2 burned out bulbs!

Thanks for any suggestions,
Jeff

Both bulbs burning out at same time would be unusual but not impossible. Usual cause of this is broken wire in wheel well. After determining bulbs ok, next step is to have someone sit in the plane and have another person vigorously wiggle the wires in the wheel well(s) and observe whether the light flickers. If it does, your problem is in the wiring in the wheel well being tried. Fix is to replace the broken wiring. This is actually quite common due to the flexing with gear retraction and extension and the exposure to cold temps.

Time to get in touch with Matt Kurke at Comanche Gear about a new landing gear harness set!
