Door Lock

Door Lock

Postby James Gardner » Thu Mar 06, 2014 3:49 am

I purchased my SWEET Twin Comanche in November, 2013, and flew her out of cold country (WI) to Texas. The only complaint is that there is no door lock! Where do I go to get one? There is a hole right in front of the handle, and the handle has an obvious slit for a locking pin to rotate into place. Check out what I am doing with this plane at www.txtimebuilder.com.

Hi Jim,

When looking for parts, I usually try to find the part number in the Parts Manual under the Tech Tab on the home page here and then Google it. After that, I'll start surfing and calling folks comanchegear.com and Matt Kurke gets first call because I want to support the guy who donates so much to keep Comanches flying perfectly, then I call Philip at Webco as their website is only the tip of the Parts iceberg there, then asod.com and there is now a link to other advertisers on the Home Page here and that helps too.

Posting here can work as some folks bought a second aircraft for parst and are parting out the stuff they don't want.

Hope this helps another Texas Twin owner.

On my single engine I found if you lubricate the door mechanism the door comes open if its not locked. I understand its not uncommon. My advice is watch the lube until you get a lock!

Jim,

A bit off topic but I did go look at your website. Glad to see a TwinCo put to such good use. Your bio shows a tremendous amount of experience.

Did see a sad tale on another Forum today with NTSB reporting RLOC of a TwinCo and impact in snow bank with substantial damage. I've seen video of this nice plane from the previous owner. The NTSB report stated that the CFI thought approching at blue line +10 was fine - you likely already know that is too fast for the TwinCo. Since this is the second time I've heard of someone trying to land with that logic, thought I'd pass this sad tale along so that your Twin doesn't meet the same fate due to a potentially inexperienced Twin Comanche CFI - please be sure to know that I'm not making any assumptions about your experience or that of anyone in your company ... just trying to err on the side of caution and sharing a learning experience.

Best of luck
Pat

Hi James, after the door of my PA30 opened twice in flight I installed a second latch on the top of the door. Saves the door opening.
