PA-30 generator control

PA-30 generator control

Postby steen » Mon Feb 24, 2014 8:37 pm

I have a PA-30B with original 50A. dual generators. No, I don't choose to change out to alternators, thank you.
What I do wish to do is change out the old electro-mechanical voltage regulators to solid state Zeftronic controllers.
My current vr's are Electrodelta VR300-14P-50, and the parts manual shows Piper #450385 and Lycoming #72077.
The Zeftronic web site seems to not be up to speed with improvements coming so I have gone thru Aircraft Spruce &
we failed to come up with a solid-state pair of controllers for my plane.
The reason for the change-over is to be able to install a gel battery which requires closer tolerance control than I have now.
Anybody have info I can borrow?

Steen, I did an AGM battery with my old generators / regulators and the set up works fine. I spent many hours on the phone with Skip - a VP at Concorde on the technical particulars. An AGM battery can actually accept the rapid charge of a generator and "recover" much faster. If you search the forums there is a whole other thread on that.

I did end up upgrading to the Plane-N-Power 70amp alternators and regulators but not because of the battery. One of my generators died and I didn't want to put more $ in that direction whe I ultimately wanted the alternators.

Steen,
If you haven't already, I recommend you call Zeftronics directly. They were very helpful when I called them to discuss their voltage and over voltage regulators for my single. I bet they have what you are looking for.

Hope this helps,

I changed out mine as well for the plane power alternators as well. Got tired of landing and taxiing in the dark. I have a couple of very good condition
generators and regulators for sale is anyone is interested.
