Dual Exhaust on 180 Comanche

Dual Exhaust on 180 Comanche

Postby Rick Greer » Sun Apr 28, 2013 12:13 am

The dual exhaust on my PA-24 (180) Comanche isn't the true STC version I thought it was, (see pictures attached).
Apparently, the Comanche my “buddy” sold me, has a jury rigged dual exhaust system without the heat shroud for giving heat to the cockpit. It just has 2 exhaust pipes that are attached to engine. I have exhaust pictures attaché to this email. The passenger’s side cracked a couple of months ago that had me removing it and sending it to an FAA certified welder in Florida. Now, this morning, I discover the left side has cracked and separated grounding me until I get it fixed. But, before I go through welding again, I want to pursue getting the approved STC’d dual exhaust OR single, which ever is less costly. The last time I googled “dual exhaust for a 180 it was going to be roughly $3000. I don’t have that kind of money. Besides, I’m selling the Comanche to get out of ownership all together. Can anyone help with information, pictures, advise, etc., on going to RIGHT/FAA APPROVED exhaust?

Rick,

I am not that familiar with the 180 but it looks like you have a factory exhaust. See like below to see what a dual exhaust looks like. If what you have is certified and legal I would have it fixed. If it is someone's home made design I would get on the phone to salvage yards and see if you can track down a servicable exhaust for the left side.

I have a serviceable, original style, single exhaust removed from my 1964 180 and replaced with a dual exhaust. I would be interested in getting it out of the hangar and onto a flying airplane. Contact me if you are interested in it. 636-462-8370.
