The original cap was short; Piper replaced this short version with a longer [depth] version, keeping the same part number. Same P/N for main and aux [not tip].

Here is Shaw Aero's website; they manufacture the fuel caps for Piper. You can [supposedly] order the rubber cups, short or long. The other bug-a-boo is the locking tab's cam will wear; fresh cups put less stress on the locking tab/cam.

Roger on the fuel lube, also if your T handle is shanking out just before the rubber swells to really tight you can get a new cap from Webco for 38 buck or if you are too cheap to plunk down the cash you can cut more threads in your T handle as Webco is now doing or they will sell you a new T handle for 7. Putting an additional washer under the T handle is a crude method that might work for a little while as long as your fuel door clearance is ok. I like the single lever action plug type better as it is quick but it might loose out on water intrusion to the threaded t handle. Thank you Webco for your Comanche support.

Does anyone know which Flyer issue the fuel cap article was in? Or was it even in the flyer?

Seems like I have 40 million issues lying around (just ask my wife), and not sure where I read it.

Folks, folks, folks, you are making this much too difficult. I am working with this exact issue right now as I had a "never again" moment a few days ago that I have been too busy to write up yet, but there is a very easy and inexpensive solution.

Lacquer thinner. Wenkman has posted this tip several times on Delphi over the past few years... either cap will regain flexibility (and size--- swell up) if soaked in Lacquer thinner for a few hours. I currently have the Webco style caps but it works on the originals too.

I use a old frozen food container, of suitable size that it can be placed in a zip lock freezer bag so the LT doesn't evaporate. Disassemble the plug and put the rubber stopper in the solution for about 3 to 6 hours. I works wonderfully and seems to hold a "renewed" condition for over a year.

Don't let it set overnight or for "days"... it will grow too much. But currently I am finding that about a 6 hour "bath" works great.

I'll look at mine tomorrow to see if they're the new or old type. I don't remember them looking like they can be taken apart unless you can just unscrew the locking handle from the bottom part. ?? If they don't come apart, why can't you just soak the whole thing?

Laquer thinner I can do. 8)

Steve... yes, they have staked the threads on the Webco style but with a little force you can still unscrew them. Those that order new rubbers from Webco have to do that to.

I prefer to unscrew them as I then know for sure that I haven't put 2 tablespoons of LT back into my gas tank as I wipe them down before I reassemble.

It is pretty easy...

The original snap to lock caps easily unscrew...
