again gear down light

again gear down light

Postby KJB » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:49 pm

another Twin Comanche with gear down light problems. This plane was flown over from the States to Spain 1 month ago, and on the ferry-flight the problem started. The gear itself is working fine, but the green light doesn´t come on. For some reason the positive connection of the bulb only gets about 4 Volts.... The ground side is ok. To me this sounds like a broken wire somewhere, but where?

When I looked in the maintenance manual that came with this plane, figure 11-70 in Part 3 with the gear electrical diagram is missing (of course it is the only page missing in the whole manual, and it had to be this one!)

I need to check the wires and connections on the gear down switches, but that is hard to do without the wiring diagram. Can anyone please send me a copy of figure 11-70, my business e-mail: maketair@yahoo.es
Or if someone can tell me which wires to check (with wiring code), that would be a great help.

Thanks, KJB

I can't help with the diagram but perhaps my experience may help in another way. My gear down light problem was intermittent. By accident I found that turning the panel lights on and off, gave enough change in voltage to jolt it into showing. After trying replacing gear harness etc, Maurice Taylor suggested replacing the nose gear limit switch- $25 later, a 6 year old problem was fixed.

Pat,

I had the same problems and the same solution, exactly.

Matt's new harness in the nose fixed it right up. No more problem.

KJB:

Since 11-70 is a larger page [folded], you may find it at the end of your manual.

Attached is a partially-colored figured 11-70. Hummm, I see the quality leaves a bit to be desired; I'll email it and a 300dpi scan too.

:D Hi ,
we found the problem.
It was the panel light dimmer switch.
Thanks to everybody.

Hi KJB,

Not an uncommon occurance. I had a friend circle the airport for an hour with "no" green only to find out his partner had flown the night before and failed to turn everything off when he was done. Checking for a green before flight was added to the checklist.

Good luck, Don

On a check ride with instructor, he distracted me, and turned on the dimmer. No green.

Later, I soldered a wire across the large resistor. Never will have this problem again.

Hi Hans,

For those without a soldering gun, you can buy Matt's gear light kit which allows the option of taking the green out of the dimmer circuit. I did and I like it.

Good luck, Don
