Looks like he never got on the step, which makes a HUGE difference in getting it off the water, and was not taking off into the wind. A little bit of showing off probably didn't help too much either.

That is the one cool thing about flying and landing seaplanes, unless you are operating on a river, or a really skinny lake, there is never a crosswind takeoff or landing. Now, who's going to come up with an STC for retractable floats for our PA24s?
